Is this good advice?

This post seems all the more relevant considering that last Friday, in Courtenay B.C., three men drove by shouting things like, "we're gonna lynch you, we're gonna kill you, get out of our fucking town' at Jay Phillips (who describes himself as 'half-black and half-white').

When Phillips yelled back 'Fuck you too,' the truck turned around and the three men got out with their fists up. The men jumped Phillips, punching and kicking him while he laid on the ground in a fetal position.

We know all this because a neighbour filmed it and posted it on you tube:

At several points, the attackers can be heard yelling racial slurs at Phillips during the attack.

Comox Valley RCMP have arrested three men aged 19, 24 and 25 and charged them with assault. Yet investigators still haven't decided whether to add a hate-crime designation. They noted it would not change the fundamental nature of the charges: “They will still be charged with assault. But if it's a hate crime they might get a stiffer sentence,” she said.

Meanwhile, Courtenay city council voted AGAINST the community's latest anti-discrimination efforts on Friday, the day after the attack. Mayor Greg Phelps said: 'I really didn't think we had a big issue, and I still don't. I've lived here most of my life and this is the first incident like this I can recall.'

WTF?!?

If it somebody tells a racist joke I like playing stupid and asking, "Why is that funny?", or "I don't get it. Explain that to me."
Racist insults and generalizations i try to do the same thing, "I don't get it. How do you know that?"
That all assumes i can have a conversation with somebody and not a fist fight (or a running away).
